Career Advancement Consultation

Position yourself for promotion, leadership opportunities, and long-term career success

Signpost of career options - sound and strategic career advancement advice
Sound & Strategic Advice

Reaching the next stage of your career rarely depends on technical ability alone. Promotion decisions often reflect leadership potential, professional reputation, communication skills, organizational priorities, and how effectively you demonstrate your value.

My Career Advancement Consultation is designed for professionals who have identified where they want to go and want expert guidance on how to get there. Drawing on more than 25 years of experience in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, I help clients develop a strategy to strengthen their professional positioning and prepare them to seize opportunities with confidence.

My role is not simply to help you prepare for your next opportunity. My role is to help you prepare for the career that follows it.

What is a Career Advancement Consultation?

A Career Advancement Consultation is a personalized professional advisory service for individuals who are preparing for promotion, pursuing leadership opportunities, or working toward a significant career goal.

Many professionals already possess the experience needed for advancement. The difficulty is communicating that experience effectively, understanding how promotion decisions are made, and positioning themselves strategically within their organization or profession.

This service combines psychological expertise, career strategy, workplace knowledge, and practical guidance to help you present your experience with greater clarity and credibility.

Who is a Career Advancement Consultation for?

This consultation is designed for professionals who have already identified their direction and want expert support achieving it.

You may benefit from this service if you are:

  • Preparing for a promotion
  • Applying for a leadership position
  • Preparing for an important interview
  • Planning a significant career transition
  • Competing for a highly sought-after role
  • Seeking greater influence within your organization
  • Returning to the workforce and rebuilding momentum
  • Looking to strengthen your professional reputation and visibility

Many of my clients are accomplished professionals who know they can contribute at a higher level but want guidance on how to present their experience strategically.

I have extensive experience supporting professionals in the federal public service, Ottawa's technology sector, academics, lawyers, and other complex organizations where advancement involves more than strong technical performance.

What does career advancement involve?

Career advancement is about more than securing your next position. It involves developing a professional strategy that supports continued growth over time.

Career advancement may include:

  • Improving your professional visibility
  • Strengthening your leadership profile
  • Preparing for future leadership opportunities
  • Preparing for internal or external promotions
  • Positioning yourself for greater responsibility
  • Communicating your accomplishments effectively
  • Building confidence for interviews and selection processes

Success often depends on understanding how organizations evaluate potential and performance.

What happens during a Career Advancement Consultation?

This advisory service includes seven hours of personalized (fully customized) support. The time is tailored to your goals and scheduled over several meetings, allowing us to adapt our work as opportunities arise.

1. Professional Assessment

We begin by reviewing your background, accomplishments, career objectives, and the opportunity you are pursuing.

Where appropriate, this may include structured interviews and psychometric leadership assessments to better understand your strengths, work preferences, and leadership potential.

2. Career Advancement Strategy

After assessing your situation, I develop recommendations based on your goals and the workplace environment in which you are operating. This may include:

  • A strategy for preparing for a promotion
  • Career positioning/repositioning
  • Leadership readiness
  • Assessment of transferable skills
  • Organizational considerations
  • Identification of potential barriers

The objective is to develop a strategy that reflects both your strengths and the realities of your workplace and industry.

3. Professional Positioning

Strong professionals are not always recognized as strong candidates. Together, we strengthen how your experience is presented through:

  • Resume review and recommended revisions
  • LinkedIn profile optimization
  • Cover letter guidance
  • Personal branding
  • Executive biography development, where appropriate

The focus is not simply on improving documents. It is about communicating your value in ways that resonate with hiring managers, selection committees, sponsors, and organizational leaders.

4. Interview Preparation

Many qualified candidates struggle because interviews assess more than technical competence and knowledge. Preparation may include:

  • Behavioural interview practice
  • Executive interview preparation
  • Public service interview preparation
  • Interview preparation for academic opportunities
  • Communication coaching
  • Answer refinement

With feedback based on insights from Industrial and Organizational psychology, the goal is to help you communicate your experience with clarity, confidence, and credibility.

5. Ongoing Advisory Support

As opportunities develop, priorities often change. Remaining consultation time can be used for support related to:

  • Opportunities for promotion
  • Transition during the early stages of a new job
  • Career decisions as they present themselves
  • Leadership challenges and workplace situations affecting your performance or advancement
  • Follow-up planning

Email support between scheduled meetings is included throughout the engagement.

Why work with Dr. Helen Ofosu?

Dr. Helen Ofosu, Psychologist, Coach, Consultant, and Author

Dr. Helen Ofosu is an expert in Industrial and Organizational Psychology with more than 25 years of experience helping professionals make informed career decisions and navigate workplace challenges.

Her work spans the public, private, and non-profit sectors, including significant experience supporting federal public servants, lawyers, academics, and professionals in Ottawa's technology community. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Carleton University.

Dr. Helen is also the author of How to Be Resilient in Your Career: Facing Up to Barriers at Work, published by Routledge in 2023.

According to the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), Industrial and Organizational Psychology applies psychological science to areas including employee assessment, leadership, workplace behaviour, and organizational effectiveness.

That expertise allows Dr. Helen to look beyond interview techniques or résumé writing alone. She helps clients understand how decision-makers evaluate candidates, how workplace systems influence career progression, and how to position themselves effectively for long-term success.

How does this service differ from career coaching?

Many people seeking career coaching are looking for guidance on promotions, leadership opportunities, or career progression.

Career coaching can provide encouragement, accountability, and practical support. Career coaching is not regulated, so there is considerable variability in what a coach can deliver.

My approach builds on those elements by applying Industrial and Organizational Psychology to your situation. Rather than offering general advice, I assess your goals, experience, workplace environment, and the factors influencing your advancement before making recommendations.

So my approach is “More than career coaching, it’s career psychology®.”

This professional advisory service is designed to help you make stronger decisions and present yourself more effectively throughout your career.

What can you expect from a Career Advancement Consultation?

Clients often leave this engagement with:

  • Greater confidence in their career strategy
  • Stronger professional positioning
  • Improved interview performance
  • A clearer understanding of how promotion decisions are made
  • Practical recommendations tailored to their goals
  • Increased readiness for leadership opportunities

The objective is not simply to help you secure your next role. It is to help you build a career that continues to grow over time.
